I love music. I love words. And I love life.
I enjoy poetry; reading it. Writing it on occasional. And so. When you put poetry to a tune you get one of two things: a nice song with nice words or an 'Owl City 'song.
When people ask me if I like music I don't even think. I say. "YES." Its like my mouth knows this. Then people proceed to ask me what kinds of music I like. But this time I don't respond so quickly. Finally I say; "I like soft music; acoustic guitars..(coming from a guy that loves to play guitar..) bands that actually record the real instruments that they are playing.. not the hard beats with techno BEEPs. I like music with..meaningful lyrics as well." Enter: OWL CITY - band of ONE MAN, Adam Young. His music isn't what you would call a REAL instrument recording. It is done with computers. (so... I like so electronic music I suppose.... not all acoustic.. Oh... then there is SKY SAILING... more on that later..) And what is even betterAdam Young knows how to play lots of instruments. So when he does his singin' thing on stage with his band - he uses real instruments. And they rocks.Owl City came out with a new album..in July. And I bought it. An hour after it can out. (I like Owl City a lot, you see) and what I found on that record. Was this.
"I saw the autumn leaves peel up off the street,
Take wing on the balmy breeze and sweep you off your feet.
You blushed as they scooped you up on sugar maple wings,
To gaze down on the city below, ablaze with wondrous things.
Take wing on the balmy breeze and sweep you off your feet.
You blushed as they scooped you up on sugar maple wings,
To gaze down on the city below, ablaze with wondrous things.
Downy feathers kiss your face and flutter everywhere.
Reality is a lovely place but I wouldn’t want to live there."
Those are the first words of the album. Read them again. Ok?
I call that poetry... but not because street/feet and wings/things and even everywhere/there rhyme. I call it poetry because... have you ever seen a leaf peel up off the street? And then get carried away by the wind? then this leaf continues to sweep you off your feet? I mean... I just find that so vivid.. ....that it HAS to be POETRY.. and this is only the lyrical part of the song. The tune part is equally thrilling...
So here is what I'm going to do. I'm not going to post a link here. I want you to go and use Google or another search engine... and find this song for yourself. It is called "The Real World" by Owl City. And while you are there look at the other songs from ALL THINGS BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL the record that this song comes from.
So yes... Poetry with a tune...
More to come!
